CINCINNATI -- Reds first baseman Joey Votto won't find out for a few weeks if
he snagged any votes for National League Rookie of the Year Award.
In the meantime, however, Votto was named the NL Rookie of the Month for
September presented by Gillette.
In an effort that might have helped his chances to overtake Rookie of the
Year favorite Geovany Soto, Votto batted .309 (29-for-94) in September with
nine home runs and 20 RBIs in 25 games. He had a .723 slugging percentage and
.400 on-base percentage.
The 25-year-old Votto finished the season with a seven-game hitting streak
and batted .453 (19-for-42) over his final 11 games.
"I thought I did well and finished up strong, which was what I wanted to,"
said Votto on Sept. 28 following the Reds' final game of the season. "It was
a goal from the beginning of the year. I thought I made big strides
defensively, and became part of a team that I think can do some things in
2009."
Votto and the Cubs' Soto are considered the two main contenders in Rookie of
the Year voting, which has already been completed. Overall, Votto led all NL
rookies with a .297 average and 24 home runs, and his 84 RBIs were second to
Soto's 86. Soto was second to Votto with a .285 average and 23 homers.
