[新聞] Bailey shuts out Pirates on four hits for sweep
PITTSBURGH -- On their last visit to Pittsburgh in April, the Reds were swept
by the Pirates in a three-game series. Cincinnati returned the favor by
completing a three-game sweep of the Pirates with a 5-0 victory on Wednesday
afternoon at PNC Park.
Cincinnati's string of strong pitching performances continued as right-hander
Homer Bailey tossed a four-hit shutout. He needed only 90 pitches and picked
up the win, improving his record to 1-2. It was the first career shutout and
complete game for Bailey.
"Bailey's fastball was working," Reds manager Dusty Baker stated. "His
location was going good and we turned a couple big double plays, and we got
some early offense from Phillips and Votto and that's all Bailey needed."
"He located his fastball well," Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan said. "He was
moving it when he needed to and used his breaking ball sparingly, but made
some big pitches when he needed to."
Pirates manager John Russell gave kudos to Bailey.
"He was efficient," Russell said. "We're obviously not swinging the bats at
all. I'm not taking anything away from him. He pitched a good game. But
nobody is swinging the bat very well."
Reds pitchers limited the Pirates to one run in 27 innings during the series.
It marked the first time that Reds hurlers have had back-to-back
complete-game shutouts since Jose Rijo and Tom Browning turned the trick on
June 9-10, 1989, against the Dodgers.
"That was the epitome of pitch conservation," Baker said. "It was Bailey's
first complete game and first shutout in the big leagues. He followed Johnny
Cueto's lead yesterday. That was as well pitched two days as I've seen in a
long time."
Pirates outfielder Garrett Jones was asked if the Reds' pitching was that
good or the Pirates were that bad?
"I think we made them better," Jones said. "I think we're just getting
pitches to hit and doing nothing with them. I'm no exception. We're just
doing it as a team."
Pirates starter Zach Duke suffered the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season.
The lefty allowed five runs on nine hits in five innings of work.
The Reds continued their timely hitting, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the
first inning. Brandon Phillips doubled and scored when Joey Votto deposited a
Duke offering into the right-field bleachers for his eighth home run of the
campaign.
"You're going to go through stretches where different players need to carry
you," Votto explained. "The way we hit last night and the way we hit today is
not necessarily the way we're going to hit all year. That's a lot of runs,
but I just think that in the long run, it will work itself out and I think
that the team in general will have a really good year."
Cincinnati nicked Duke again in the second inning. Drew Stubbs singled and
scored on a double by Ryan Hanigan. Orlando Cabrera blooped in an RBI single
scoring Hanigan and staking the Reds to a 4-0 lead.
Stubbs, who entered the game batting .185, hit his third home run of the
season, a solo shot with one out in the fourth inning, upping the Reds lead
to 5-0.
The Reds have now won five in a row, while the Pirates dropped their fourth
game in their last five.
Cincinnati returns home for a big weekend series with division rival St.
Louis.
"Guys are swinging the bats well top to bottom," Hanigan said. "We're getting
guys on base and we're driving the ball. Guys are taking aggressive at-bats.
It's good to see. Hitting is contagious; when guys are doing well, it kind of
rubs off and everyone is hot right now. It's a good thing. Pitching is also
contagious and I think guys are challenging each other on this team. I think
guys want to prove that they can do better than the other guy and that's
healthy. Guys want to go out there and show everyone that they are not going
to be the one that's the weak link in the chain, and that's what everyone is
doing and it's a good feeling."
