ATLANTA -- Reds third baseman Scott Rolen was out of the lineup for the
second time in three games as the Reds played the Braves in the finale of
their two-game set on Thursday.
"He's very tight and sore and he has been for a couple of weeks," Reds
manager Dusty Baker said. "We've got to monitor him big time."
Baker was coy about exactly what has been bothering Rolen, who has a history
of back issues. "The usual," Baker said when asked what the problem was.
But rather than a tight back, this may be a tight hamstring.
"I'm OK," Rolen said. "I'm just trying to catch up."
The veteran hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning to spark a
winning rally against Milwaukee in Cincinnati on Tuesday and was 3-for-4 with
two doubles Wednesday night against the Braves.
Rolen came into Thursday hitting .419 in his past nine games with two homers
and 10 RBIs. His average was .291 and he had eight homers to go with 23 RBIs
in 36 games.
With Rolen not in the lineup, Miguel Cairo got the start at third base and
second baseman Brandon Phillips moved down to the cleanup spot in the batting
order.
