[情報] Hanigan placed on DL with broken thumb
CINCINNATI -- Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan knew he hurt his left thumb when he
slid into second base attempting to break up a double play in the fourth
inning of Friday's game. But it wasn't until later in the game, when he took
a foul-tip off the thumb, that Hanigan began to grow concerned.
"I hooked it on the base trying to break up the double play," said Hanigan.
"I was trying to stay in the game, just make it through. I didn't think it
was broken. Then I got hit with a couple foul-tips. I had to gather myself.
It kind of rattled everything."
Prior to Saturday's game, Hanigan was placed on the 15-day disabled list with
a fractured left thumb, and catcher Corky Miller's contract was selected from
Triple-A Louisville.
To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Chris Dickerson was transferred
to the 60-day DL.
"That's why you need catchers," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "It's one
position where you are one play, one foul-tip away from injury. They get beat
up. [Miller] knows what he's doing. Our guys like throwing to him."
According to Hanigan it was a clean break on the upper portion of his thumb,
which is better than a break that occurs closer to the joint. His thumbnail
was black and blue, and he was wearing a bandaged splint.
The injury is to the thumb on Hanigan's non-throwing hand, which isn't as
much of an advantage for a catcher.
"That's the hand that takes the impact," Hanigan said. "There are a lot of
things they can do with splints to help with that. It's not too bad hitting.
I can grip a bat. It won't keep me from staying strong. I'll do whatever I
can to help the team from the bench."
Hanigan is batting .351 with two home runs and a career-high 17 RBIs. He's
hitting .463 at Great American Ball Park.
Miller, who was batting .282 with four homers and 24 RBIs in 31 games at
Louisville, will make his season debut for the Reds. He appeared in 21 games
for the Reds last season, batting .179 with a homer and 10 RBIs.
Miller, who began his career in the Reds organization, is familiar with the
Reds pitching staff, having caught most of them in Spring Training or in the
Minor Leagues.
"I'm just going to try to keep things rolling," Miller said. "I've been
seeing the ball well. I know most of the guys here. It's unfortunate to come
to the big leagues when you know it's because somebody got hurt. [Hanigan]
has done a great job."
