CINCINNATI -- Dusty Baker said Homer Bailey is "chomping at the bit" to get
back in the Reds' rotation, but the right-hander will have to first take the
mound for Triple-A Louisville.
Bailey went on the disabled list May 24 with shoulder inflammation and is
eligible to return Tuesday. He'll start for the Bats on Tuesday night at
Syracuse.
"This is more of a tuneup," Baker said. "Would rather have him tune up there
than tune up here. And he thought he was ready for here, but we wanted to
make sure."
Baker said Bailey pitched well in a bullpen session Monday, and he expects
Bailey to throw around 80 pitches in his rehab start. He last started May 23
at Cleveland, where he allowed three runs in 2 1/3 innings before leaving
with the shoulder problem. For the season, he's 1-2 with a 5.51 ERA.
Right-hander Sam LeCure will make his third career start in place of Bailey
for the Reds on Tuesday against San Francisco. LeCure split the first two
starts of his career with a win over Houston and a loss last Wednesday at St.
Louis. If Bailey's start at Syracuse goes well, he could return to the
Cincinnati rotation Sunday when the Reds host Kansas City.
