2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 6 Aroldis Chapman, LHP
Aroldis Chapman, LHP
2010 Rank: NR
Signed: January 10, 2010
ETA in Majors: 2011
Statistically speaking:
In 41 relief outings between Triple-A and the big leagues, Chapman allowed
an earned run in just seven of them. He yielded 13 hits in those games;
meaning he allowed just 13 more in the other 34 appearances. After
International League batters hit .246 off of the lefty in 13 starts,
Chapman allowed a .168 BAA as a reliever in the Minors and Majors combined
the rest of the way.
Scouting report:
Talk of Chapman's fastball nearly reached mythical proportions in the Minor
Leagues. Then he came up to the big leagues and showed that every bit of it
was true, and then some. Chapman hit 105 on a radar gun after getting called
back, and when he's pitching in relief only, he can consistently crank it up
in triple-digits. In scouting parlance, that might be thought of as plus,
plus, plus. He's got a nasty plus slider to go along with it, and as a short
reliever, that's really all he'll need. He does have a changeup, something
he'd have to work on if the Reds ever want to try him again as a starter.
But the power stuff, plus the weaker changeup and issues with command make
it seem that the bullpen, and likely a closing job, are in his future.
Upside potential:
He's a big leaguer right now, one who was good enough to make the postseason
roster last year. He could be an All-Star caliber closer right now and for
many years to come.
They said it: "He has No. 1 starter stuff. But he has, like I said, No. 1
bullpen stuff, too," -- Reds manager Dusty Baker
He said it: "To be my first time, of course I was nervous. I think that's a
normal situation. It was pretty exciting for me to come in tonight." -- after
his Major League debut
