2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 45 Devin Mesoraco
Devin Mesoraco, C
2010 Rank: NR
Drafted: 2007, 1st (15)
ETA in Majors: 2011
Statistically speaking:
Don't trade Mesoraco to an American League team and think he'd like to DH.
In 2010 when he wasn't catching, he went just 15-for-57 (.263) with one
homer, three doubles and eight RBIs. When he was behind the plate, Mesoraco
hit .309 (105-for-340) with 22 doubles, five triples, 25 homers and 69 RBIs.
Scouting report:
Mesoraco has all the tools to be a good all-around catcher. At the plate,
he's got a solid approach and good bat speed, allowing him to hit for both
average and power. He's an average runner, better than many backstops and
he's fairly athletic. He's got a strong arm from behind the plate, though
he still needs to work on the various nuances of playing the position
defensively. He does, however, profile very well to stay behind the plate.
Upside potential:
A very good all-around catcher who hits close to .300 with 20 homers annually.
They said it: "You could see it at Spring Training that he had turned a
corner and became the prospect we thought he'd be when he was drafted. We'll
see where he stands at Spring Training. ... There's not much more we could
have asked of him." -- Reds GM Walt Jocketty
He said it: "I think coming into the year, I had a better undestanding of how
things work, of what I had to do to prepare for each game, each at-bat. I got
off to a good start and I think that was the key to it. Things kept going on
from there, I finished up well and I was really happy with the year."
