2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 49 Yonder Alonso
Yonder Alonso, 1B
2010 Rank: 30
Drafted: 2008, 1st (7)
ETA in Majors: 2011
Statistically speaking:
Once Alonso shook off a rough start and got used to the new level in
Triple-A, he started hitting like most expected him to when he was drafted.
After the All-Star break, Alonso hit .335/.416/.561,
highlighted by a .366/.423/.663 July.
Scouting report:
with terrific plate discipline, a good approach and the ability to make
adjustments, Alonso should hit for average. He's got power to all fields
and should continue to do so. He's a capable first baseman, but with
Joey Votto in the way, he's gotten some work in left field, where he's
not as adept defensively.
Upside potential:
His bat is ready for the big leagues now, and he could be a
middle-of-the-order run producer once he can find a place in the lineup.
They said it: "It will take some time to figure it out. That's why we want to
see [Alonso] at different positions. He's got a great bat and Joey is going
to be at first base for a long time. I don't see moving Joey." -- Reds GM
Walt Jocketty
He said it: "I just have to go out there and do my part and I can't worry
about who is ahead of me. That's out of my hands. I just have to go out there
each day and do the right thing and hope for the best."
