One by one, Cleveland writers came over to chat about the wonderfulness of Rafer Alston. They haven't seen a point guard in awhile, at least not in 'wine and gold' (don't ask). But he has been just what the Rockets have needed, and not just for a game or two. "I know he gets ripped a lot," Brian Windhorst of Akron Beacon Journal said, "But I don't think it's a proper narrative." Brian talks like that, but he knows his stuff and it's a good point. It proves everything is relevant. We did not hear that in Salt Lake City or Phoenix. We do hear it more than you would think. It proves that he really is on a terrific run. In the Rockets' nine-game winning streak he is averaging 15 points, making 43.6 percent of his shots, very solid shooting for a guy that takes a healthy number of 3s. He is a much more complete point guard than is often appreciated, but has been held back by an inability to consistently hit open jumpers the way he has for nearly 25 games. Tonight's 8 of 16 shooting in Cleveland not only keyed the Rockets' 93-85 win on Tuesday, taking the winning streak to nine games, their longest this decade, it pushed his shooting this season past four percent. What it does not prove, however, is that the Rockets are set. The point guard is not a glaring 'do something, anything' hole. The Rockets don't have to get any point guard they can get their hands on. There is a reason Alston beat out all those challengers to his job and it was not only by default. There is also a reason that two-third of the league, and especially the team in Cleveland (one reference to those colors is enough) is trying to get its hands on a point. But the better a team is, the more it should be open to trades. All trades come with risk and reward. If there is no chance at the reward, teams should understandably be cautious. Rockets GM Daryl Morey said last week that the Rockets' winning streak did not change his thinking because he still considered the Rockets likely to make a run to the post-season. Perhaps, though, it demonstrates them able to do more than just get to the dance. And in their case, winning even one round and being competitive in another is something of reward. There will be deals around the league. Everything seems to indicate that the Grizzlies are ready to make more deals, with only Rudy Gay untouchable (with Mike Conley close.) The price, however, has gone up since the Pau Gasol trade. The Grizzlies don't have to move contracts as desperately and Chris Wallace probably does not want to be brought in before even the imaginary Popovich Commission by giving away Mike Miller. The Kings also dealt their burdensome contract when they moved Mike Bibby. Ron Artest has said he will opt out of his contract to become a free agent next summer. Going nowhere before then, the Kings would want something for him. As a rental, teams might not give up much for him, but they don't have to commit long-term to idea that he won't blow up another team. For the Rockets, both would be attractive and Morey has spoken to both GMs and pretty much the rest, too. They have not gotten far enough for talks to get even serious, and this time of year, until the talks get serious, they really don't count because everyone is talking. It says something that the bulk of Morey's progress has been in finding Kirk Snyder a place he can play, and that has not progressed far enough for anything to be considered close. The Rockets understandably don't want to break up their core. There is always interest in Steve Novak and Luther Head because of their shots, but it is Carl Landry or Aaron Brooks that will likely be needed to swing a significant deal. Because they are so young and have so much room to grow, any decision on a deal will become a choice not only of the players in the deal, but between chasing this season's success and future growth. The Mavericks could consider themselves legitimate championship timber and deal 10 more years of Devin Harris for two, maybe three with Jason Kidd. That does not sound like the Rockets. And we're not talking about getting a future Hall of Famer for one of the kids, either. All of that goes to why Morey was hired in the first place. Leslie Alexander wanted "the best" player evaluation possible. He wanted to make good, solid trade decisions, the sort that they would make under any circumstances, rather than with a glimmer of opportunity at the trade deadline. He is not a 'do something, anything' kind of guy. The Rockets, however, look pretty good. If point guard is not a glaring hole, they are a solid playoff team, even in the deeper-than-ever West. Those non-starter demands could come down by Thursday's 3 p.m. deadline. Suddenly, the potential reward has increased. So might the need to take a risk.
