The Rockets got good shots, the sort of shots that wins these sorts of games.
They had Aaron Brooks flying past Tim Duncan to the rim for the lead. They
had Ron Artest wide open on a 3-pointer for a tie. They just could not get
the shots they wanted to go.
Both missed. The difference, however, was not just the shots that missed with
seconds to go and the Rockets desperately trying to catch the Spurs; it was
that with five minutes left and the game tied, the Spurs got those shots on
every possession.
The Spurs made just enough so that when Brooks and Artest missed, San Antonio
held on to beat the Rockets, 88-85, before 18,300 Saturday at Toyota Center.
“That’s a difference between a great team and just a good team,” Yao Ming
said. “We still need to improve that.”
Late look
The Rockets did get a last chance when Shane Battier tied up Tony Parker for
the rebound of Artest’s miss. Battier won the jump and the Rockets called
time out to set up a last play with 4.2 seconds left.
They inbounded to Yao who shoveled the ball to Brooks, but he had time only
to sling a heave toward the rim that fell well short.
“We were in position to win the game,” Brooks said. “We were so close. I
think we did a better job today, but they made the plays.”
The Rockets, however, lamented the ones that got away on their previous
attempts to take a lead or force overtime.
They had rallied back from an 11-point second-half deficit and, with five
minutes left, Luis Scola scored on a drive to tie the game 77-77, the 35th
time the game was tied or the lead changed hands.
Spurs take charge
That was when the Spurs went to work, putting the game in Duncan’s and Tony
Parker’s hands. Between them, they scored the Spurs’ final 17 points,
Parker getting the last nine with Duncan assisting on six.
Though Yao held Duncan to 15 points on 7 of 18 shooting, with the game tied,
Duncan hit a jumper then twice passed to Parker, who finished with layups.
Parker’s second layup drew a Scola foul for a three-point play that gave the
Spurs a 7-0 run to an 83-77 lead with 2:45 left.
“They executed very well,” Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. “We had that
stretch where they got the lead, and now you’re fighting from behind.
Against that team, it’s very difficult with Tim and Parker. You just have to
maintain your focus. We just have to respond. We have to come back. We could
have won the game. We didn’t.”
One more try
The Rockets, however, did come back again, with Yao hitting a left-handed
hook and Brooks finishing a drive. After Parker sank a jumper with 90 seconds
remaining, Brooks twice drove to the rim. Though he missed on both shots,
Scola got the rebound of the first, drew a foul and made both free throws
before Yao slammed home the second Brooks drive to pull the Rockets to within
one with 43.6 seconds left.
Finally, the Rockets got the stop they needed, taking away the back cut so
that Parker launched and missed from 18 feet with 28.9 seconds left.
The Rockets had Artest open, but when Brooks did not see him, he took off for
the rim.
“I saw I was one-on-one with Tim Duncan,” Brooks said. He was at the free
throw line, so I thought I could get past him. I could have got a foul on
that play. I thought for sure they were going to call a foul. They didn’t,
but it’s the fourth quarter and I guess they’re not going to make those
calls.
“It’s my fault. I missed my read. Ron was open. I guess I just tripped and
fell on my own.”
Parker seals win
The Rockets sent Parker to the line and he pushed the lead to 3. Artest,
however, got a wide-open look with 9.9 seconds left, but missed.
“I thought Aaron got fouled, and that’s a good look at the end of the game,
wide open,” Artest said. “It was a great look. I will take that wide-open
shot all day, but I couldn’t get it to fall.”
Moments later, the Rockets were out of last chances, left instead to lament
the difference between themselves and the team they are chasing.
“They’re the Spurs,” Shane Battier said. “They’re going to be solid. They
’re not going to beat themselves.”
