Clippers will test Rockets’ ability to limit turnovers Rockets forward Chandler Parsons has kept count and assumes the Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin knows the score, too. Parsons slammed home a put-back dunk on Griffin last season in Los Angeles, shoving his friend moments later to make sure he knew who had bent the rim. Griffin, for reasons obvious and plentiful, could assume he would have his turn. “He hasn’t gotten me,” Parsons (6-9) said. “He acts like it wasn’t a big deal, but I’ll remind him (Tuesday) how big a deal it was.” Griffin (6-10) likely won’t need the prodding to set his sights on the airspace above the Toyota Center rims, an image the Rockets could consider as useful a warning as any in their season-long quest to control a penchant for turnovers. Though guard Chris Paul is questionable for Tuesday night’s game with a bruised right knee, no team better converts turnovers into buckets than the Clippers, and no team does it with more high-flying, game-changing flair. The Rockets often have made cutting down on turnovers their top priority. Weeks ago, coach Kevin McHale described it as his mission “every day. Every single day.” But they know what is at stake. “They’re a team that can really expose you and capitalize on your turnovers in the fast break,” Parsons said. “We definitely can’t afford to turn the ball over and let them get free run-outs to do what they do.” The Clippers collect more steals and score more points off turnovers than any other team in the NBA. The Rockets commit more turnovers and give up more points off turnovers than any other team. The Rockets know how dangerous a mix that can be. “They like to get out in transition and throw DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin lobs,” guard Toney Douglas said. “We have to be extra careful to take care of the ball. “I think it’s (about) just making good decisions. We can still play fast and make good decisions. That’s all — knowing when to speed up, knowing when to slow down.” The Rockets appeared to have made progress in limiting turnovers and shoring up their transition defense before their recent road trip but averaged 18 per game in consecutive losses to the Hornets, Celtics and 76ers, teams that do not convert turnovers into points anywhere near as often as the Rockets’ next two opponents, the Clippers and Mavericks. “It’s not going to be a next-day solution,” Carlos Delfino said. “We’ve been talking about it. I think we’re good at talking one day and the next day improving, but you have to build on that. You have to do it all the time. For sure, the worst part of our game is turnovers. We have to solve that as soon as possible. On nights like the last three games, turnovers have just been killing us.” A strong case can be made they have to solve it immediately, before Griffin takes off. Parsons won’t have to remind Griffin of his dunk for Griffin to set his sights on a bunch of his own, a reminder that could serve the Rockets even more usefully than it would tease Parsons’ celebrated friend. “Getting dunked on (stinks),” Parsons said. “At the same time, backing away and letting a guy get a wide-open dunk is even more soft. You have to challenge them. They’re athletic. They’re freaks. You have to challenge them. You have to foul them hard.
