Mixed Braggs
With Eddie Griffin skipping Tuesday's game in Sacramento, forward Torray Braggs
had seven points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes, earning mixed reviews of
his most extensive playing time of the preseason..
"He makes a lot of mistakes," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "He plays
really hard. He has to keep playing hard. I love the intensity. But he has to
cut down on the mistakes."
Braggs offered the same assessment but hoped the experience would settle him
down if he gets another shot.
"I'm just trying to work hard and do what I do," Braggs said. "I made a lot
of mistakes out there. I messed up a lot of sets. I just tried to work hard
and make up for the guys that weren't here for whatever reason.
"You try so hard not to mess up, instead of relaxing and doing what you can
do, inadvertently you do mess up."
Nachbar fighting
Rockets second-year forward Bostjan Nachbar continued to struggle with his
perimeter shot but likely had his best game, overall. Nachbar has made just
14 of 45 shots (31.1 percent) in the preseason, and Rockets coach Jeff Van
Gundy considers improving perimeter shooting a priority. But Nachbar did
improve on defense.
"I tell you what: Boki fought," Van Gundy said. "I have to say that's the
first time I saw him fight like that.
"This is how coaches think. If a guy is missing, and he's killing himself
(with effort), the leash is a little longer. If a guy's not killing himself,
and he's missing shots, he's on no leash."
Still, Van Gundy said eventually he would expect the players around Steve
Francis and Yao Ming to provide defensive intensity and accurate shooting.
"We have to surround Steve and Yao with shooting," Van Gundy said. "That's
just how it is. If you're open, you have to make it, or we're going to be as
they have been the last four years, losing one-possession games."
Forward's checkup
The Rockets could add Adrian Griffin to the small forward mix as soon as today.
Griffin, who had offseason knee surgery, has joined practices on a limited
basis but will be examined today to see if he is ready to be cleared to fully
join the team's workouts.
Looking ahead
Jeff Van Gundy was asked if he thought the Rockets could win the (Western)
Conference this season.
"We're just glad to win a game," Van Gundy said after Tuesday's preseason win
in Sacramento. "We'd like to make the playoffs first. It's a little early to
say that. We're just going to try to get better."
Finally, a win
Tuesday's preseason win was Jeff Van Gundy's first as Rockets coach, but he
said the milestone meant nothing to him.
"I remember my first win. Other than that, I just try to get that group,
whatever group, playing the best they can. This isn't about me, I'll tell you
that. The first one, I do remember."
Van Gundy's first win as an NBA head coach came in the 1995-96 season when
the Knicks beat the Bulls team that finished the season 72-10.
