C Jeff Reed 1996-1999
He was the regular for just one season, but he easily out-hit Joe Girardi
and Kirt Manwaring, and he wasn't that bad with the glove.
1B Todd Helton 1997-
Helton, the eighth pick in the 1995 draft, is still the only great player
developed by the Rocks; first player in MLB history to rap 100 extra-base
hits in two straight seasons.
2B Eric Young 1993-1997
First batter in franchise history, and a few days later hit Rockies' first
HR in Colorado; played a lot of left field in his first three seasons, led
NL with 53 steals in '96.
SS Neifi Perez 1996-2001
Put in context, his hitting stats were simply atrocious during his years
with the club, but he also happened to be one of the better defensive
shortstops in the game.
3B Vinny Castilla 1993-1999
In both 1996 and 1997, Castilla batted .304 with 40 home runs and 113 RBI;
he's the only player in history to duplicate his Triple Crown stats in
consecutive seasons.
LF Dante Bichette 1993-1999
Sure, it would've been nice if he'd drawn the occasional walk; we
shouldn't quibble, though, considering he leads Rockies in hits (1,278),
doubles (270), and RBI (826).
CF Ellis Burks 1994-1998
Played slightly more left field than center, but the only alternative is
OBP-challenged Juan Pierre, and Burks left Colorado with nifty .579
slugging pct. for Rocks.
RF Larry Walker 1995-
Always had trouble staying in the lineup, but when healthy he was
all-around brilliant: average, power, speed, smarts, and terrific defense
in right field.
SP1 Pedro Astacio 1997-2001
Tops the Rockies in wins (53), strikeouts (749), innings (827), shutouts
(13), and nobody else is close; showed just how good he was after getting
out of Coors.
SP2 Armando Reynoso 1993-1996
The 58th pick in the expansion draft, and a good one; plenty of DL time
limited him to 30 wins in four years, but 4.65 ERA positively sparkling
for Rockies.
SP3 Kevin Ritz 1994-1998
First things first . . . in five seasons, Ritz racked up a 5.20 ERA.
That's the bad news. Good news is that he won more than he lost, including
17 wins in 1996.
SP4 John Thomson 1997-2002
Suffered disastrous (1-10, 8.04) 1999, then missed all of 2000 while
recovering from shoulder surgery, but with 27 career wins he's sixth on
the franchise list.
RP Steve Reed 1993-1997
They never let him have the saves, but the righty submariner pitched in
329 games, posted a 3.68 ERA, and is the only Rockie to pitch effectively
year to year.
