Offers for Barmes don't sway Rockies

Clint Barmes' plummeting average and Jason Jennings' soaring price tag have
made them attractive trade targets. The Cardinals, Rangers and Brewers have
explored deals for Barmes, with Milwaukee offering center fielder Brady Clark.
Even with top prospect Troy Tulowitzki expected to start at shortstop,
Colorado isn't motivated to move Barmes. The Rockies have interest in Clark,
but his salary is problematic - they would like the Brewers to eat $2 million
of his $3.8 million contract - and they are not sure he could outperform
Barmes if they try him in center field.
"Teams just want us to give Clint away. We think he can still help us,"
general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "He's not the first player to go through
a sophomore slump."
Whether Barmes is asked to switch positions could hinge on the Jennings
trade discussions. Houston remains his most likely destination if the
Astros can meet the Rockies' demands for starter Jason Hirsh and either
center fielder Willy Taveras or reliever Dan Wheeler.
Today is more about who's staying than who's going, marking the deadline
for teams to tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players or make them
free agents. Among the Rockies on the bubble, pitcher Josh Fogg, catcher
Yorvit Torrealba, who could sign today, and center fielder Cory Sullivan
are expected to be offered contracts, while former closer Chin-Hui Tsao
will be non-tendered with the team hoping to sign him to a minor-league deal.
"As far as I know I will be with the Rockies," Fogg said Monday.
Torrealba eased some concerns about his injured shoulder by throwing for
five consecutive days at Coors Field. O'Dowd said Torrealba "looked a lot
better." Still, the club remains interested in free agent Rod Barajas.
Potential non-tenders on the Rockies' radar include pitchers Jorge Sosa,
Mark Hendrickson and Chris Reitsma.
