The Rockies lost out on free agent Rod Barajas, but welcomed another catcher
into their mitts Friday.
In an attempt to build organizational depth, Colorado signed former Dodgers
farmhand Edwin Bellorin to a minor-league contract. He will make the rookie
minimum of $380,000 in the unlikely event he makes the big-league team.
Bellorin gives the Rockies protection in Triple-A, where prospect Alvin Colina
is expected to receive the bulk of the playing time. Earlier this winter,
Colorado signed Geronimo Gil, who spent time with the Baltimore Orioles last
season.
As it stands, Yorvit Torrealba and rookie Chris Iannetta will share the
starting role in the big leagues. The Rockies, however, were concerned enough
about Torrealba's repeated shoulder injuries last season to pursue Barajas.
Torrealba recently avoided arbitration by signing a $1.075 million contract,
but only a portion is guaranteed. Barajas chose the Philadelphia Phillies
over the Rockies earlier this week, agreeing to a one-year, $2.5 million
contract with a club option for $5 million in 2008 or a $500,000 buyout.
Bellorin hit .234 with seven home runs for Triple-A Las Vegas last season.
