Told for years he was too small to play in the big leagues, Jamey Carroll is
enjoying a week too good to be true. The Rockies' utility player said today
that he has agreed in principle on a two-year, $4-million contract with a
club option for a third season, a fitting prelude before his Indiana high
school retires his uniform Friday night.
Carroll, whose deal won't be finalized until he takes a physical, emerged as
one of the Rockies' most pleasant surprises last season after being acquired
from the Washington Nationals. He secured the second base job in late April
and hit .300, while playing Gold Glove-caliber defense.
"I was always the guy who was scrapping and clawing to get the roster spot in
spring training. I never thought it would happen," said the 32-year-old
Carroll. "It feels good to know I am going to be somewhere and that they
liked what I did."
Talks with Carroll were interrupted after the Rockies re-signed Kaz Matsui
to share second base. A phone call from manager Clint Hurdle left Carroll
comfortable with his role - he will be used at second, shortstop, third base
and in the outfield - as he prepares for his second season in Colorado.
"It's about doing whatever is best to help the team win," Carroll said.
In avoiding arbitration, Carroll will receive $1.7 million next season,
$2.15 million in 2008 with a club option for $2.5 million in 2009, his first
year of free agency. He has a $150,000 buyout on the final year's salary,
which can escalate to $3 million based on games played (260) or plate
appearances (1,200) in the previous two seasons.
"I asked Jamey (last month) to trust us and told him that, 'you are a good
player and a good man, so good things are going to happen,'^" Hurdle said
recently.
Given his measure of security, Carroll has begun filing paperwork to start
a charitable foundation in Denver to benefit children in the area and in
Indiana. Carroll returns home Friday where Newcastle High in Newburgh, Ind.,
will retire his No. 21.
Rather than frame his prep uniform, Carroll chose to permanently display the
Rockies away jersey to honor his late mother, Patty, whose favorite color was
purple.
"It's a statement for her," Carroll said.
