The Rockies, attempting to improve their bench, offered a minor-league
contract to outfielder Karim Garcia on Thursday while intensifying their
pursuit of catcher Javy Lopez.
Garcia would compete for a bench role as the team attempts to find a viable
left-handed-hitting reserve, a glaring weakness last season. The club already
has agreed in principle on a minor-league deal with Alexis Gomez.
That general manager Dan O'Dowd continues to spend a lot of time on this
issue makes it clear the Rockies want Cory Sullivan, in line for a big raise
through arbitration, to earn a roster spot in spring training.
Sullivan, Gomez or even Garcia could complement the right-handed hitting
Willy Taveras, the favorite to start in center field. Garcia, who played in
Japan the past two seasons and performed well in winter ball was a teammate
of Rockies adviser Vinny Castilla on Mexico's World Baseball Classic team in
March.
The Rockies also are determined to add a third catcher for spring training
with their sights on Lopez.
"Nothing is finalized, but we continue to make progress," agent Chuck Berry
said.
Catchers Sal Fasano and Sandy Alomar Jr. also are possibilities.
