Garcia would compete for a bench role as the team attempts to find a viable left-handed-hitting reserve, a glaring weakness last season. The club already has agreed in principle on a minor-league deal with Alexis Gomez. That general manager Dan O'Dowd continues to spend a lot of time on this issue makes it clear the Rockies want Cory Sullivan, in line for a big raise through arbitration, to earn a roster spot in spring training. Sullivan, Gomez or even Garcia could complement the right-handed hitting Willy Taveras, the favorite to start in center field. Garcia, who played in Japan the past two seasons and performed well in winter ball was a teammate of Rockies adviser Vinny Castilla on Mexico's World Baseball Classic team in March. The Rockies also are determined to add a third catcher for spring training with their sights on Lopez. "Nothing is finalized, but we continue to make progress," agent Chuck Berry said.
