The contract will provide Lopez a 40-man roster spot, but only a portion will be guaranteed. His arrival signals the Rockies' desire to create a wide-open competition for playing time between returning starter Yorvit Torrealba, rookie Chris Iannetta and Lopez. "When we sat down at the end of the season, we identified six teams that he would like to go to and Colorado was on that list. He wants to catch again," agent Chuck Berry said today. "And he's willing to go in there and try to win a job." Per the Rockies' suggestion, Lopez worked this winter with one of the Rockies' minor league coaches for a week to refine catching skills that eroded last season. Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd came away impressed with Lopez's motivation and conditioning, enough to take a chance on a base contract for approximately $1 million. Lopez, who hit .251 with eight home runs and 35 RBIs a year ago with the Orioles and Red Sox, also provides flexibility to explore a spring-training trade at the catching position. He would require only termination pay if he fails to make the opening-day roster. A deal with outfielder Alexis Gomez will also be finalized soon once he takes a physical. Gomez is currently playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic. Luis Gonzalez's exit to the Yomiuri Giants is still pending a medical exam that will occur once the player secures a visa from Venezuela. The Rockies are still strongly in the mix for starter Brian Lawrence, whose preference is to pitch in the National League West.
