[官網] Rockies complete deal to add Gomez
Roster reaches 40-man limit with outfielder's signing
DENVER -- The Rockies have completed the long-expected addition of outfielder
Alexis Gomez -- a part-time player who became a postseason wonder with the
Tigers last year -- to their Major League roster. They're at the 40-man limit.
The Rockies reached an agreement with Gomez, 28, earlier in the offseason but
waited until he concluded play in the Caribbean Series before completing the
contract, which calls for a partially guaranteed rate of $575,000 for Major
League service.
Gomez went 4-for-9 with a home run and four RBIs for the Tigers as they
defeated the Athletics in the 2006 American League Championship Series. With
the Rockies, Gomez, a .259 hitter over 62 Major League games with the Royals
(2002-04) and Tigers (2005-06), will compete for backup duty.
The Rockies also signed a pair of infield vets to Minor League contracts --
Frank Menechino, who has batted .240 in 450 Major League games with the
Athletics (1999-2004) and Blue Jays (2004-06), and Russ Johnson, a .288
hitter in 961 games with the Astros (1997-2000), Devil Rays (2000-02) and
Yankees (2005). The pair will not receive invitations to Major League Spring
Training.
Neither player appeared in the Majors last season. Menechino appeared in just
18 games with Louisville and Columbus in Triple-A, and Johnson hit .275 with
14 homers and 40 RBIs for Columbus.
