Yanks need to bring in Holliday, ship out Cano, Hughes
With "change" being the operative word across the land, the New York
Yankees are saying "count us in" for a major overhaul and they apparently
intend to spare no expense in enacting it, wrote New York Daily News
baseball columnist Bill Madden.
Problem is, money might not be able to buy their biggest need — a top-
of-the-rotation starting pitcher. There's really only one on the free
agent market, and all indications are CC Sabathia wants to stay in the
National League, where he can hit and not face designated hitters. That's
why the one marquee player the Yankees bring in this winter may well be
a commodity they seemingly don't need - left fielder Matt Holliday. It's
just that when the Rockies put Holliday on the block, there won't be a
lot of teams willing to meet the contract demands of his agent, Scott
Boras. And the Yankees, who do need to get younger in the outfield, may
find his availability too hard to resist.
Assuming they are able to sign Holliday, 28, long-term — and that's
always a big assumption with a Boras client heading into free agency —
the Yankees would then have to give up a premium package to Colorado,
something along the lines of Robinson Cano and Phil Hughes. Cano, despite
his down year in '08, is still the Yankees' best trade chip and, if they
deal him, the Bombers can be counted on as being big players for free
agent second baseman Orlando Hudson.
One thing that's important to keep in mind: Even with Brian Cashman coming
back as Yankee GM, Gene Michael figures to have a bigger say this winter
on player personnel decisions. And Michael, as we all know, loves those
high on-base percentage guys. (For the record, Holliday had a .405 on-base
percentage away from Coors Field in '08.)
Otherwise, the Yankees go into the offseason with two significant holes
to fill - first base and center field. If they want to be foolish, they
could fill first base by throwing $100 million at Boras client Mark
Teixeira. But with Jorge Posada's throwing ability uncertain, and first
base his likely destination by the end of his contract in 2011, they would
probably be advised to expedite that process this spring. If it's determined
that Posada can catch, then first base will have to be addressed from the
outside - free agent Kevin Millar or a trade for Texas' Hank Blalock are
two options - but it would be a lot easier for the Yankees to have Posada
concentrate on first base and bring in a veteran free agent such as
switch-hitter Gregg Zaun to help Jose Molina with the catching. In any case,
the Yankees should not be fooled into bringing Jason Giambi back at a
discount because of his power numbers. Rather, it's that .213 average with
runners in scoring position that should dictate saying goodbye to Giambi.
