Rockies position breakdown: Infield
By Tracy Ringolsby, Rocky Mountain News
* For starters
1B, Todd Helton: Back problems limited him to two games after July 4 and
resulted in October surgery.
2B, Clint Barmes: Ranked eighth in NL middle infielders, with .468 slugging
percentage.
3B, Garrett Atkins: Led club in RBI (99) for third time in four full
big-league seasons.
SS, Troy Tulowitzki: After hitting .166 before All-Star break, led NL
shortstops with .327 second-half average.
* Backing up
IF/OF, Jeff Baker: Hit .304 at Coors Field but .221 on the road.
2B/SS, Omar Quintanilla: Committed only four errors, one at 2B and three
at SS.
3B/LF, Ian Stewart: Only LH-hitting rookie on club, other than Helton,
to hit 10 HR.
* On tap
2B, Eric Young Jr.: Speed is game; got fall time in center field.
SS, Chris Nelson: Big-time bat but is going to have to play second.
Hurdle's view
"Todd is someone who we will have to figure out as the season goes on.
He seems to be in a good place. We've had a lot of conversations. What
we need from him is quality. I'm not concerned with quantity.
"We still have a couple people in play at second base, but Barmes showed
up very good last season. He looked a lot more comfortable at second
base as the season went on.
"Tulowitzki is in a good place. He has a chance to grow from last year.
He loves to play. He loves to compete.
"Atkins and I had a long discussion in December. He's going to play third
base and swing over to first. Offensively, he needs to regain the swing
path he had but got away from last year. He has an intense desire to be
a part of a good thing in Colorado. He wants to be a core guy.
"Baker gives us a different look at second base and adjusted to the
position really well. Late in the season, he showed us he can handle
third base, and we know he can play the outfield, too. Quintanilla plays
a good shortstop and excellent second base.
"Stewart has youth on his side. He'll get some work at second base in
drills, but we are looking at him at third and left field."
Bottom line
With Atkins' ability to swing across the infield and Stewart able to step
in at third, the Rockies have impressive depth, but the lineup needs
Helton's presence. He is older and coming off the back problems, so it's
not logical to think he will repeat his big offensive seasons, but just
having him in the lineup makes the hitters around him better. As several
managers said in the second half last year, without Helton, the Rockies
lacked that hitter who could stretch at-bats in late innings, wearing down
pitchers to make mistakes in key situations. He has that ability to expand
his strike zone to stay alive in an at-bat and isn't afraid to fall behind
in the count. Tulowitzki's second half reaffirmed the competitor he is. He
could have given in to the first-half failures, but instead he rebounded
impressively.
