Rockies position breakdown: Outfield
By Tracy Ringolsby, Rocky Mountain News
* Lining Up
LF, Seth Smith: Has to win job but has pure left-handed stroke that creates
thoughts of eventual power and high average.
CF, Ryan Spilborghs: Workmanlike center fielder with offensive assets. Had
.407 OBP last year. Figures to bat leadoff.
RF, Brad Hawpe: Most raw power of anyone in lineup. Improving against
left-handers, hitting .282 against them in 2008.
* Battling for a job
OF, Scott Podsednik: One player on roster with stolen-base potential.
Showed he could come off bench last season.
OF, Dan Ortmeier: Also can play first base. Switch hitter began hitting
only right-handed last season.
OF, Matt Murton: Career .288 big-league hitter got lost in shuffle with
Cubs and Athletics last year, playing only 28 big-league
games.
* On tap
OF, Carlos Gonzalez: Can play all three outfield spots. No. 1 prospect with
Arizona in 2007, and No. 1 with Athletics in 2008.
OF, Dexter Fowler: Top prospect in system. Smooth in field, has big-time
speed and will grow into power.
Hurdle's view
"Smith is going to get every opportunity to win the job, but he's going to
have his hands full with challenges from Ortmeier, Murton and Gonzalez. He
has hit everywhere he has gone. He has a pure swing and keeps the bat head
in the hitting zone a long time. He has to make strides with his defense
but is a good enough athlete that that shouldn't be difficult.
"Spilborghs is a solid all-around player. He's more a corner outfielder but
has the fundamentals to handle center field. He has to remember his
limitations and he will be fine.
"Hawpe keeps getting better. He became a more consistent hitter last year
and made adjustments to handle left-handed pitchers. He has a high-risk,
high-reward swing, with the rewards coming more often. He was the best
guy on our team driving in runs with two outs, and his defense is better
than he gets credit for. He was set back last year, playing through an
ankle he rolled at the end of spring training.
"We just want to see Gonzalez play. We've heard a lot about him. We've seen
him on video. I'm confident he can, defensively, handle either corner and
want to see him in center field. He will get a chance to make the club.
"Dexter just needs to play. He has tremendous abilities and a great work
ethic. We have to remember he hasn't played Triple-A yet."
Bottom line
The trade of Matt Holliday took away the name recognition, but the outfield
should be a plus. The Rockies have a blue-collar group with the projected
alignment of Smith, Spilborghs and Hawpe. None of them is a Gold Glove
candidate, and the speed is average at best. But they have a quality work
ethic with offensive upsides. Murton provides a quality platoon possibility
for Smith, and Podsednik is a perfect backup for Spilborghs. Spilborghs is
just keeping the position warm until Fowler shows he is ready to make the
big-league jump.
