Rockies position breakdown: Starting rotation
By Tracy Ringolsby, Rocky Mountain News
* Formidable foursome
RHP, Aaron Cook: All-Star has dominating sinker. 16-win total in 2008 was
one short of club record.
RHP, Ubaldo Jimenez: Allowed three or fewer earned runs in 27-of-34 starts.
LHP, Jorge De La Rosa: Went 7-3 with 3.08 ERA in 14 games after the All-Star
break.
RHP, Jason Marquis: Pitched at least 167 innings five years in a row.
* Who's No. 5?
LHP, Jeff Francis: Potential shoulder surgery makes him unlikely for season.
LHP, Franklin Morales: Big part of 2007 pennant drive. No command in 2008
led to return to minors.
RHP, Jason Hirsh: Coming off sprained rotator cuff that kept him out of
rotation last year.
RHP, Greg Reynolds: Former No. 1 draft choice has battled command in big
leagues.
LHP, Greg Smith: Only allowed 169 hits but gave up 111 walks in 190 1/3
innings with A's in 2008.
RHP, Matt Belisle: Worked mainly in bullpen at Triple-A Louisville last
season.
RHP, Josh Fogg: Won 10 or more games in five of seven seasons, including
2-for-2 with Rockies.
* On tap
RHP, Brandon Hynick: A Brad Radke-type who overthrew initially at Double-A
and lost movement.
RHP, Jhouyls Chacin: Has the fastball and changeup to pitch in bigs right
now.
Hurdle's view
"We will take a wait-and-see approach with Francis. He has been a key guy
for us. Three guys are pretty well set - Cook, Ubaldo and Marquis. De La
Rosa is a guy you have to look at as being a part of that group. He took
a big step forward in the second half last year but now needs to show he
can dominate in both halves of a season.
"I believe this is as much depth as we have ever brought to spring training.
Each of the candidates for the open spot in the rotation has shown an
ability to be successful. They also have struggled."
Bottom line
The emergence of Jimenez and De La Rosa is critical for this rotation. They
both have shown an ability to dominate hitters, but neither has put together
six consecutive months of success. With Francis most likely out for the
season, a key for the Rockies is that they control all six of the other
candidates for the fifth spot. Hirsh, Morales, Reynolds and Smith all have
at least one option left, meaning they can be sent to the minor leagues.
Belisle and Fogg are signed to minor league contracts. LHP Glendon Rusch
could wind up in the rotation mix, but more likely he will be a long
reliever.
