DENVER -- The Rockies' efforts to sign outfielder Carlos Gonzalez to a
seven-year, $80 million contract are moving in a positive direction and could
result in a signed contract this week, according to sources with knowledge of
the negotiations.
Reports for several days have said Gonzalez plans to come to Denver from
Venezuela this week to sign what sources in the U.S. and Venezuela told
MLB.com on Monday is a seven-year, $80 million contract. However, there is no
official confirmation until Gonzalez arrives in Denver and takes a physical
-- a prerequisite to a deal being signed.
Fabiola Bohorquez, recently hired as Gonzalez's publicist, said through a
series of dispatches on Twitter that Gonzalez has agreed to the deal. The
Denver Post also reported that Barhoquez said during a phone call that
Gonzalez loves Denver and his teammates.
Gonzalez is officially represented by agent Scott Boras, who told ESPN.com in
a text message that the sides are still in discussions and the tweets are not
official.
"That is not Carlos making that announcement,'' Boras said in the text
message. "We are in discussions and negotiating with Colorado.''
The plan to come to Denver and attempt to complete a contract was first
reported Friday by El Nacional, a newspaper in Caracas, Venezuela. Gonzalez,
25, who lives in Venezuela, could receive a visa and fly to Denver on
Wednesday to finalize the deal, the paper reported, quoting a source close to
Gonzalez.
Also on Friday, a Rockies official told MLB.com that the Rockies have had an
offer in place for Gonzalez, who led the National League in batting with a
.336 average last season and earned his first Silver Slugger and Gold Glove
Awards.
The Rockies reached out to Gonzalez after signing shortstop Troy Tulowitzki
to a seven-year, $134 million extension that will keep him with the club
through 2020. Tulowitzki gave up multiple years of free agency, which
Gonzalez would do if he signs the Rockies' offer.
Without such a deal, Gonzalez could become a free agent after the 2014 or
2015 season, depending on whether he becomes arbitration-eligible after 2011
or 2012. By signing for seven years, Gonzalez will delay free agency until
after 2017. If he hits the market after such a deal, he will be only 32,
still in position for a lucrative deal should he choose to test the market.
