It’s probably going to be a couple of years before things get much better
in Colorado. GM Dan O’Dowd can’t even seem to stick with one plan for more
than a year, much less build a consistent winner. He probably only has one
season left to try to figure something out, as a fourth straight sub-.500
year should be enough to get him let go.
Since the Rockies don’t the money to pursue quality free agents, a big
turnaround is a longshot.
When the Rockies do go shopping this winter, they’ll be hitting the bargain
bin. Jay Payton and Ronnie Belliard are expected to be non-tendered, so
the team will be looking to fill holes in left field and at second and
third base. It looks like the infield names they’re considering are
one-year stopgaps -- Eric Young, Vinny Castilla, Robin Ventura,
Jose Hernandez, etc. The big-ticket item $2.5 million!) could be
Juan Encarnacion, who should be non-tendered by Florida, or Jose Cruz Jr.
It’s possible that Payton will be back, but he’d have to be convinced
that $1 million less now co ld mean a couple of extra million dollars once
he leaves Coors Field behind.
Assuming that Justin Speier isn’t non-tendered, the pitching should look
a lot like it did in 2003. A couple of inexpensive veterans will be
brought in, but the Rockies will rely mostly on pitchers
who aren’t yet eligible for arbitration.
Since this looks like another 75-win team, O’Dowd is doing the right
thing by sending out signals that Todd Helton and Preston Wilson are
available. My guess is that neither will be traded, but Wilson to the
Mets has at least some chance of happening.
