Became youngest American (21 years, 2 months) and second overall (behind
Lleyton Hewitt, 20 years, 8 months in 2001) to finish No. 1 in history of ATP
Rankings (since 1973)...Made biggest jump to No. 1 from previous year,
improving from No. 10...Became sixth American to finish No. 1 and first since
Agassi in 1999 (Sampras-6 times, Connors-5, McEnroe-4, Courier-1, Agassi-1).
Compiled best season of his career with six titles (second to Federer"s 7) on
three different surfaces in eight finals, 72 match wins and an ATP-best
19-match winning streak...Only player during year to reach SF or better at
three of four Grand Slam tournaments and captured first Slam title at US
Open...In addition, won an ATP-best five matches after saving match point
(went on to win title three times) and registered a co-record 149 mph serve
(239.7 kmh) in June at Queen"s Club in London en route to winning title.
Made coaching change after losing in 1st RD at Roland Garros and hired former
Andre Agassi mentor Brad Gilbert in June...Compiled a 25-11 record with one
title through May and went 47-8 with five titles under Gilbert, including a
27-1 mark during summer hard court circuit...Opened season with first career
Grand Slam SF at Australian Open and won back-to-back five-set matches,
including a Grand Slam record 21-19 in fifth set in QF over El Aynaoui in a
five hour marathon...The fifth set was longest in games in history of Grand
Slam play...During match he injured his right wrist and he lost to Schuettler
in SF...Returned in Memphis and reached final (l. to Dent) and in March
advanced to QF at TMS Indian Wells with wins over Enqvist, Lopez and Grosjean
before losing to Schuettler.
In April, reached final in Houston (l. to Agassi), missing three-peat
performance...Won first title of season in St. Poelten (d. Davydenko) before
losing to Sargsian in 1st RD at Roland Garros...Turned things around on grass
by posting wins over Rusedski, Dent, Agassi (saved one M.P.) and Grosjean in
final to win Queen"s Club title...Continued success at Wimbledon where he
lost in SF to eventual champion Federer.
Began hard court circuit with title in Indianapolis (d. Srichaphan), lost to
Henman in SF of Washington and won back-to-back Tennis Masters titles in
Montreal (d. Federer in SF, Nalbandian in F) and Cincinnati (d. Mirnyi in SF,
Fish in F-saved 2 M.P.)...Put together his most impressive run at Flushing
Meadows where he rallied from two-set deficit (and one M.P.) in SF against
Nalbandian before beating No. 1-to be Ferrero in straight sets in
final...Afterwards, moved to leader of ATP Champions Race.Helped US to 3-2
Davis Cup World Group victory over Slovakia by clinching tie over Beck.
Closed season with consecutive SF in Basel (l. to Nalbandian), TMS Paris (l.
to Henman) and Tennis Masters Cup in Houston where he went 2-1 in round robin
play before losing to eventual champion Federer...Compiled consistent records
on all surfaces -- 44-10 on hard, 12-6 on clay, 10-1 on grass and 6-2 on
carpet...Led ATP circuit in four (of six) service categories -- aces (989),
1st serve points won (81 percent), service games won (91%) and break points
saved (69%)...Finished tied No. 2 in 2nd serve points won (59 percent)...Also
played and won most tie-breaks, compiling a 36-21 mark...Earned a career-high
$3,227,342.
