The official world group nominations for the first round of Davis Cup were
announced today. Carson, California is hosting the first round tie between
the United States and Croatia on 4-6 March.
The US team, who last year made the final, will to be a formidable force and
certainly will be a contender for the trophy this year. The team they have
fielded to face the mighty Croats consists of Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, Bob
Bryan and Mike Bryan. The decision of Andre Agassi to play this year has
excited the players as well as the US supporters.
Andy, who was driving around Austin when he heard the news of Agassi's
involvment this year reacted: "I tried to act professionally when we were
talking on the phone. But when I hung up the phone I started yelling and
screaming. I told him we were 100-percent supportive in whatever capacity we
could use him. He adds experience and an aura of confidence."
The Croatian team is made up the big servers, Mario Ancic, Ivan Ljubicic,
Roko Karanusic, and Zeljko Krajan.
Both Agassi and Roddick have impressive singles records against Ancic and
Ljubicic. The Bryans are, of course, undefeated in Davis Cup. Andy makes no
secret of the importance of Davis Cup in his schedule, and with his 14-5
win-loss record in Davis Cup, he will be hoping to build on that and help the
US team progress past Croatia.
