Roddick knocks him out for third straight year
LONDON -- Defending champion Andy Roddick reached
the semifinals at Queen's, struggling past Sebastien
Grosjean of France 6-4, 7-6 (5) Friday at this
Wimbledon tuneup.
The second-seeded American, who beat Grosjean in the
finals the last two years, is attempting to join
Lleyton Hewitt and John McEnroe as the only players
to win three straight Queen's titles.
Grosjean, who fought off five match points to defeat
James Blake on Thursday, often played the crisper
shots and showed greater skill at the net.
The Frenchman earned the first break point of the
match at 2-2, but he made a forehand error and later
lost the opening set with consecutive double-faults.
Grosjean started the second set with a break, but
Roddick evened it at 3-3 by threading a backhand
winner down the line.
In the tiebreaker, Roddick earned two match points
with a double-handed backhand pass. He lost the next
point, but then won when Grosjean returned his serve
long.
