Roddick advances to third straight Queen's final
LONDON -- Defending champion Andy Roddick advanced to
his third straight final at the Queen's grass-court
tournament, overcoming a sloppy second set to beat
Radek Stepanek 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 on Saturday.
The second-seeded Roddick, who has won 14 straight
matches at Queen's, is trying to join Lleyton Hewitt
and John McEnroe as the only players to win three
consecutive titles at this Wimbledon warmup.
"I played some of my best tennis at the end," Roddick
said. "In the third set, I felt I returned a lot, lot
better."
Roddick will play either Ivo Karlovic or 2002 Australian
Open champion Thomas Johansson in Sunday's final. Karlovic
and Johansson were to play later Saturday.
Roddick had to save two break points during his first
service game, then broke Stepanek on his way to taking
the first set.
Then things started to unravel for the American. Stepanek
broke Roddick in the second game of the second set, as
the two-time champ struggled with his serves and returns.
The Czech evened the match by breaking Roddick in the eighth
game with a backhand winner.
Roddick rallied to take a 3-1 lead in the third set. He
missed a chance to break Stepanek again when the two
reached deuce nine times before the Czech held on.
Roddick did break for a 5-2 lead and won the match when
Stepanek's return sailed wide.
