U.S Davis Cup Team Announced

Captain Patrick McEnroe has announced his five man team that will take on
Belgium in the play off tie set for September 23rd. The winner of the tie
earns the right to play in the world group next year. The loser will be
relegated to a lower division.
The American team taking the flight to Leuven, Belgium will be Andy Roddick,
James Blake, Robby Ginepri, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan. A young, but fully
experienced and enthusiastic team! The strongest test for the Americans will
undoubtedly be the surface. The Belgians have opted to put the tie on clay.
The Belgian team has yet to be announced. There has, however, been a bit of
controversy over which players will be asked to participate. In Flushing
Meadows this past week, there was some discussion over whether or not the
coach will opt to take Belgium's top player, Xavier Malisse, due to Malisse's
unwillingness to participate in past Davis Cup competitions.
Of the five chosen, The US team will be reduced to four competition players
next week. James Blake has not participated in Davis Cup since 2003, however
after his performances this summer, no one can deny him a place on the team.
James has the experience of competing abroad in a Davis Cup tie, as he played
in the semi final against France in 2002. Also making a strong case is an
impressive Robby Ginepri, who had an excellent hard-court run this summer
along with his 2-0 win-loss record in Davis Cup. The Bryan twins are, in
Patrick McEnroe?s words, the ?clutch in doubles? lately. As French Open
champions, they will not be daunted by the prospect of playing on clay. All
players will be keen to justify their place in the team in the up coming
couple of weeks.
Andy always places Davis Cup with the utmost importance in his calendar. He
is very passionate about representing his country and has produced some
stirring performances in the competition.
Andy will be joined in the upcoming Davis Cup tie by Bob and Mike Bryan, and
they will be on a high when they arrive in Belgium. The delightful duo won
their first US Open doubles title , beating the top seeded pair of Bjorkman
and Mirnyi. Bob and Mike wrapped up then victory very comprehensively, 6-1,
6-4, with a customary chest pump to wrap things up. This is the pair?s fourth
Grand Slam final of the year, but their first victory. This Grand Slam
victory adds to the French Open title which they won in 2003. After the match
Jonas Bjorkman said, ?they played too good today?, Mike Bryan confirmed this
by saying, ?we played a perfect match today?. They will certainly be a force
to reckon with in Belgium in two weeks!
