Roddick fourth to qualify for Masters Cup
Andy Roddick begins play at this week's Masters Series Madrid secure in the
knowledge that he has qualified for the season-ending Masters Cup in
Shanghai.
Four spots in the elite field remained Monday after the American
mathematically booked his place to join Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Marat
Safin.
After last week's tournament results in Moscow, Vienna and Stockholm, world
number 3 Roddick is guaranteed to finish within the Top 7 of the season
points race and thus qualifies for the 4.45-million-dollar event for the
third straight year.
Roddick, the 2003 year-end number 1, played in Houston in 2003-2004, reaching
the semi-finals both times. "I'm very excited about qualifying for Shanghai,"
said Roddick,
seeded second behind Nadal this week in Spain. "It's always one of my goals
every year, to qualify. I'm excited about my first trip to China."
With just three weeks of the regular 2005 ATP season remaining, competition
for Shanghai is heating up. Among those hoping to make significant strides in
Madrid will be Argentine Guillermo Coria, who is sixth in the Race, Russian
Nikolay Davydenko (7th), Argentine duo Gaston Gaudio (9th) and Mariano Puerta
(10th), Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero (11th), Argentine David Nalbandian
(12th) and in-form Croatian Ivan Ljubicic (13th), winner of back-to-back
titles in Metz and Vienna.
