Andy Celebrates 25th With Win
“I remember spending my birthday here as a kid,” Andy recollects to the
media. “One year I was here when Jimmy made his run to the semis. I snuck in
the players lounge and stole cheesecake that year,” he joked (we think).
(XDDDD)
In perfect playing conditions for an afternoon match at the US Open, Andy
advances to the third round after Argentina’s Jose Acasuso retired from a
left knee injury following completing the third set, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, ret.
The first set started with each player holding serve, but Acasuso was the one
who broke with three great passing shots to take the lead, 4-3. Andy quickly
answered back by earning three break points. Acasuso came up with the goods
to hold serve, win the game, and then went on to win the set, 6-4.
“He was hitting pretty well,” Andy said in his post-match press conference.
“I wasn’t panicked, I was seeing if he could keep it up.” Acasuso didn’t
and the second set was where Andy got pumped up. After holding serve on the
first game of the set, Andy earned a break point and then the break, sending
a message to Acasuso that he only plans on celebrating today. After holding
to jump ahead 3-0, Andy’s game “clicked” and his game was blazing. At 4-1
with the serve on Acasuso’s strings, Andy sent the fire at the Argentinian,
earned a triple break point, and then another break to lead 5-1. Serving out
the set, they each held one set a piece at the one hour mark.
When Andy returned from a bathroom break, he saw Acasuso with the trainer for
an official medical time out. After Acasuso’s left knee was wrapped up, play
resumed but not full throttle Andy’s opponent. Feeling the pain, Andy had no
mercy and put the pressure on to break right away. After holding serve to
4-2, the point of the match occured on double break point with a Volley War
that Andy won when Acasuso sent one into the net. Fist pumping in delight, he
hussled back to his chair anxious to take the set. Four serves later, Andy
was up two sets to one, winning the third 6-2.
After seeing his opponent shake his head at his box, the trainer was called
out again and Acasuso threw in the towel. Even though Andy this wasn’t his
ideal way of moving into the third round, he’ll take the golden ticket a bit
sooner than expected to now have time to have a birthday dinner with his mom.
“At the end of the day, its good to get through.” Yes, it is. Stay tuned to
AR.com as Andy continues his success at the 2007 US Open.
