GREINKE GREAT, BUT ROYALS ARE BLANKED
OMAHA – The Kansas City Royals' top pitching prospect showed the fans at
Rosenblatt Stadium on Monday night why he's expected to make the big leagues
before his 21st birthday. Right-hander Zack Greinke, making his Triple-A debut
in just his third professional season, no-hit New Orleans through four innings.
However, Greinke was not involved in the decision as Zephyrs lefty Carlos
Hernandez and two relievers combined on a four-hitter in a 4-0 shutout of
Omaha.
Greinke, who was named both the Royals Minor League Pitcher of the Year and
The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year pitching for Class-A
Wilmington and Double-A Wichita in 2003, walked Phil Hiatt with two outs in
the first inning. Hiatt was the Zephyrs only base runner through the first
four frames. Jason Alfaro ended Greinke's no-hit bid with a solid single to
left-center field leading off the fifth. But, Greinke retired the next three
batters to finish an economical 62-pitch effort.
