The Royals on Sunday afternoon announced a change to their big league roster. Shortstop Mike Aviles has been recalled from Omaha, and third baseman Alex Gordon has been optioned to Triple-A. Aviles unexpectedly broke camp with Kansas City this spring, but he appeared in just two games before being sent to Omaha to continue building his arm strength after undergoing Tommy John surgery last season. For the O-Royals, the 29-year-old hit .284/.324/.403 with one homer in 67 at bats. Gordon, meanwhile, lost his starting spot with the Royals to Alberto Callaspo, and he is being returned to Omaha to receive regular playing time. The 26-year-old infielder spent one game with the O-Royals earlier this season while rehabbing a broken thumb, which he suffered during spring training.
