2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 34 Joh …
John Lamb, LHP
2010 Rank: NR
Drafted: 2008, 5th (145)
ETA in Majors: 2012
Statistically speaking:
Lamb had a stretch in the Carolina League during which he was arguably
the best pitcher in the Minors. In 13 starts, he had a 1.45 ERA, .219 BAA,
0.991 WHIP, 10.8 K/9, 1.8 BB/9, 6.00 K/BB and 0.1 HR/9. He had a five-start
stretch in which he gave up just one unearned run over 28 1/3 innings.
Scouting report:
Lamb has above-average stuff and plus pitchability. He can get his fastball
up into the mid-90s and commands it well. His changeup is nearly as effective
as the fastball, and while his curve is a little behind the other two, it's
still a very usable offering. The fact he can throw strikes with all three
makes them all better pitches. He goes right after hitters and competes
very well.
Upside potential:
Just 20, he's a fast-tracker who could top a rotation some day.
They said it: "I think what we've got to look at is our long-term success. We
have to be careful not wanting to move them too fast, being realistic about
where they are in their development, with the pitching in particular. They'll
tell us when they're ready." -- J.J. Picollo, Royals assistant general
manager of scouting and player development
He said it: "When I'm at my best, I'm throwing strikes all the time with my
fastball and working off of that. That makes my other pitches sharper. The
games I haven't had success in have been largely because of a lack of
fastball command."
