2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. 8 Eric …
Eric Hosmer, 1B
2010 Rank: NR
Drafted: 2008, 1st (3)
ETA in Majors: 2012
Statistically speaking:
In his first full-season stop, back in 2009, Hosmer hit .138/.205/.200
against lefties. Following a promotion to Class A Advanced ball that year,
he "improved" to .194/.194/.222. In 2010, there was a complete about-face:
.376/.430/.455 back with Wilmington, and .338/.380/.716 in Double-A.
Scouting report:
Hosmer has a very advanced approach at the plate, with the ability to hit
the ball, with authority, to all fields. LASIK eye surgery during the
offseason clearly helped him track the ball better. The power that most
projected him to have started to come to fruition in 2010, and there's
little doubt that some of the 43 doubles he hit will add to the 20 homers
he finished with. He's a smart baserunner and should be a very good defender
at first. Not that he needs it, but he's got a plus arm, one that used to
throw mid-90s fastballs from the mound in high school.
Upside potential:
A prototypical first baseman, one who hits for average and power,
hitting right in the middle of the lineup annually.
They said it: "There's a lot as you get going up [through Double-A and
Triple-A]. Probably, I'd have to say [Royals prospects Mike] Moustakas or
[Eric] Hosmer. Both of those guys, you make a mistake, you're going to lose
the ball." -- Angels pitching prospect Tyler Chatwood on who are the most
intimidating hitters he's faced
He said it: "It's a great honor. I've never played in a big league stadium
before. This is the first time, and I'm excited about it." -- after being
named to the All-Star Futures Game
