[新聞] Murray, Royals combine on one-hitter
Matt Murray is justifying the Royals decision to move him to the starting
rotation.
Murray fanned a career-high nine batters and allowed one hit over 6 2/3
innings as Class A Short-Season Burlington blanked Pulaski, 5-0, on Monday.
Selected by the Royals in the 10th round of the First-Year Player Draft in
June, Murray allowed a first-inning single to Daniel Paolini before retiring
the next 17 batters. He hit Paolini with a pitch in the seventh and followed
that by plunking Alfredo Morales. Murray fanned Dillon Hazlett for the second
out of the inning before being replaced by Malcom Culver after 80 pitches.
"Pretty much all three of my pitches, fastball, slider and change-up were
working," Murray said. "I was sticking mostly with my fastball and attacking
hitters."
The 21-year-old right-hander spent his junior season working out of the
bullpen for Georgia Southern, where he closed out nine games. Upon being
drafted, the Royals decided to convert Murray back into a starter, a role he
had in his freshman and sophomore years for the Eagles.
Murray, who fanned five in a row at one point Monday, is 2-2 with a 3.18 ERA
and stands third in the Appalachian League with 42 strikeouts in 39 2/3
innings.
"I knew talking to them coming up to the Draft the Royals were going to draft
me as a starter," he said. "My first year [in college], I was a starter. But
we didn't have too many people for the late innings this year, so my coach
asked me to do it.
"It really doesn't matter to me, it's two different mind-sets," Murray added.
"Closing a game it's more intense, and starting you're trying to go as deep
as you can."
Over his last three starts, the 6-foot-4 Pennsylvania native has come on
strong, allowing one earned run over 17 2/3 frames with 19 strikeouts. Murray
credited that to a rejuvenated right arm.
"My arm is starting to feel better, it was dead after college and taking a
little time off," he said. "My fastball is starting to feel better, and it
has some life to it."
Culver finished off the game, fanning four and walking two over the final 2
1/3 innings for the Royals.
Lane Adams walked twice and scored a pair of runs while Murray Watts had two
RBIs for Burlington.
