KANSAS CITY -- Second baseman Johnny Giavotella and pitcher Kelvin Herrera
have won the Royals' top Minor League awards for 2011.
Giavotella, 24, now with Kansas City, won the George Brett Hitter of the Year
Award. Playing for Triple-A Omaha, he was leading the Minors with 153 hits
when called up to the Royals on Aug. 5.
With a .338 average, Giavotella had 34 doubles, two triples, nine homers, 72
RBIs and 67 runs in 110 games for the Storm Chasers. He also was named to the
all-Pacific Coast League team.
Herrera, a 21-year-old right-hander, won the Paul Splittorff Pitcher of the
Year Award. A reliever for Class A Wilmington, Double-A Northwest Arkansas
and Omaha this year, he had a combined record of 7-1 -- along with 14 saves
-- with a 1.64 ERA in 44 games. In 65 2/3 innings, he struck out 70 and
walked just 14.
On July 10, Herrera was on the World team in the Futures All-Star Game at
Phoenix.
Herrera, Giavotella and other Minor League award winners will be honored at
Futures Night on Sept. 16 at Kauffman Stadium prior to the Royals-White Sox
game at 7:10 p.m. CT.
