[新聞] Royals' Starling cited for underage drinking
MINNEAPOLIS -- Outfielder Bubba Starling, the Royals' top pick in the 2011
First-Year Player Draft, was among three of the organization's prospects
cited for underage drinking last weekend.
They were occupants in a vehicle driven by another player when they were
stopped at a random alcohol check point following last Saturday's Arizona
State-Southern California football game at Tempe, Ariz. The Royals' training
camp, where the Arizona instructional league players are now active, is in
nearby Surprise, Ariz.
The other two underage players given citations were not identified. The
driver also was given a breathalyzer test and did not register. After being
cited by police, they were sent on their way.
Royals general manager Dayton Moore, after learning of the incident, said in
statement: "The players involved, which included Bubba Starling, put
themselves in jeopardy by having a drink and not being of legal age. It was
not a good decision on their part. We're disappointed in their actions and
we'll deal with it internally."
J.J. Picollo, assistant general manager for scouting and player development,
was headed to Arizona to deal with the incident.
"We always tell these guys, 'You're professional athletes now, you represent
the Royals, and anything you do, positive or negative, will impact us somehow
and impact their careers somehow,' so that's how it's disappointing," Picollo
said. "It's a hard lesson to learn, and we'll deal with it internally."
Picollo said appropriate punishment for those involved was being considered,
but he said they would not miss any games.
Starling, 19, was signed on Aug. 15 for $7.5 million. He's a right-handed
power hitter from Gardner, Kan., not far from Kansas City. He signed with the
Royals instead of taking a football scholarship to the University of Nebraska.
