A starting pitcher could make the difference for the team, and if the free
agent can see that, then it might be a last-minute marriage made in heaven.
Dec 29, 2011 - They say the best things come to those who wait. Every year,
that maxim holds true in the MLB offseason as various teams find a gem
waiting there to be signed, somehow lasting through the frenzy of the
baseball winter meetings and the rest of the free agency feeding season.
One-year deals can be found on players overlooked or even overanalyzed, and
the Kansas City Royals might enjoy this if they can wait to fill out their
starting rotation just before spring training.
Right now, there are several nice pitchers to be found on the free agent
market. Despite several former trade candidates finding new homes and hyped
free agents like C.J. Wilson and Mark Buehrle moving on, names like Roy
Oswalt, Joe Saunders, Edwin Jackson and Hiroki Kuroda still remain. And while
it's not even January yet, it's impossible to tell who will be left and who
will be snatched up between now and spring training.
The buzz on Matt Garza of the Cubs means he will likely find a new team
sometime this winter. Jackson and Kuroda will also find new homes in the next
couple of weeks, with Jackson's new home maybe coming in a matter of days.
But some others might wait to find the home they like and, in the end, settle
for a deal more palatable for a team like the Royals.
Even if one of the aforementioned names are not available, others like
Bartolo Colon or Paul Maholm might be looking for a last minute home and the
Royals could then profit. Every year a team finds someone looking for the
right situation and certainly the AL Central is open enough for the Royals to
make a move given their influx of young, developing talent. A starting
pitcher could make the difference for the team, and if the free agent can see
that, then it might be a last-minute marriage made in heaven.
