[新聞] Royals make Pudge Rodriguez an offer
SUNNY ISLES BEACH, Fla. -- The Royals called longtime catching star Ivan
Rodriguez to express interest in bringing him into camp in the wake of the
injury to Royals starting catcher Salvador Perez. However, the Royals were
told that while Rodriguez wants to keep playing, he isn't ready to accept at
this point.
"We believe in the guys we have currently, but we're always looking to
explore every option and that's what we are doing,'' Royals GM Dayton Moore
said. The Royals will take a look at a few more catchers in hopes of
improving their depth. They liked Rodriguez, as Royals bench coach Chino
Cadahia was Rodriguez's first catching instructor in the minors.
Rodriguez, 40, has been working out, staying in shape and waiting for a
chance to continue his stellar career. But it isn't certain why he isn't
accepting the Royals' overture. Perez is said to be out at least three months
after knee surgery following a spring incident. The Rays are among other
teams looking at their catching situation.
Rodriguez has 2,844 career hits but he'd probably need to play two more years
for a realistic chance to become the first catcher to crack the 3,000-hit
mark. Rodriguez was limited by injuries to 44 games for the Nationals last
year.
