STARTING ROTATION The fact the Angels won't see Royals ace James Shields until late in the series, if at all, is huge. Shields pitched his heart out in Tuesday's win over the A's. But even past Shields, Kansas City offers the more formidable — and consistent — pitching staff. After Jared Weaver, who will start Game 1 for Anaheim, but who follows? Matt Shoemaker? C.J. Wilson? Newark native Hector Santiago? The Royals will toss Danny Duffy and Jeremy Guthrie at the Angels before Shields is ready to go, and we like them. EDGE: Royals BULLPEN Greg Holland (46 saves, 1.44 ERA) and Wade Davis (1.00 ERA) give the Royals perhaps the best back-end in the playoffs, and recent college standout Brandon Finnegan dominated in two scoreless innings Tuesday night. But the Angels have every reason to want to get to their relief corps early, too, thanks to the resurgence this season of Huston Street, who had 41 saves, and Jason Grilli. Still, we're giving the slight edge to the ... EDGE: Royals LINEUP In Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, the Angels have a pair of mashers the Royals can't even come close to matching. Add that to the fact that Josh Hamilton says he's healthy and that he's backed up in the No. 5 hole by Howie Kendrick, who slashed .297/.347/.397, and you've already got a lineup with plenty more big-inning potential than Kansas City. That, of course, doesn't mean anyone should sleep on the Royals, who showed just how dangerous they can be on the base paths, stealing 7 of 8 against Oakland Tuesday night. It's just that, Salvador Perez led the team in bombs at 17. That's not the kind of firepower you want going into the postseason. EDGE: Angels BENCH Lots of speed on this Royals bench, which we saw Tuesday. There's Jerrod Dyson, who swiped 36 bags (off the bench!) and hit .269, albeit with little pop. There's also Raul Ibanez for late pinch-hitting heroics,, which he seems to deliver every time. But there's a bit more stability, I think, on the Angels' side. Backup catcher Hank Conger and Collin Cowgill can get hits when Anaheim needs them. Efren Navarro gives the Angels a guy who can pinch hit late and play multiple positions. EDGE: Angels INTANGIBLES Tough to say which team's got the bigger heart here. There's the Royals, who will go into Game 1 riding high off their Wild Card victory and if they win that, the momentum might shift dramatically. But manager Mike Scioscia prepares his club as well as skipper out there and somehow they've overcome the devastation of losing starters Tyler Skaggs and Garrett Richards for the season. Plus, two words: Rally Monkey.
