Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost shook off the label as a manager known to mess up at the wrong time after guiding his club to Game 7 of the World Series, but it's a new season so we can go back to second guessing the Royals' skipper. Yost has a curious Opening Day lineup, electing to bat Alex Gordon -- the team's best hitter in 2014 -- sixth. How many managers make out a lineup with their best hitter sixth? Gordon led the team in both on-base percentage and slugging percentage last season, hitting .266/.351/.432. OK, those aren't George Brett in-his-prime numbers, but they were the best on the team. His 19 home runs also led the team. The numbers say your best hitter should actually bat second, although most managers hit their best guy third or fourth. Instead, Yost is hitting Mike Moustakas -- he of the .212 average and .271 OBP in 2014 -- second. Both he and Gordon bat left-handed so that wasn't a factor with right-hander Jeff Samardzija starting for the White Sox. No, it appears to be a spring training thing. Gordon had a bad spring, hitting .200 but with worrisome totals of 10 strikeouts and no walks. Spring training stats are a small sample size so don't mean a whole lot, but strikeout and walk rates are the one thing that stabilize fairly quickly. Keep in mind that Yost also moved Gordon down in the lineup in the postseason after the left fielder hit .190 in September with 29 strikeouts in 102 plate appearances (albeit with 16 walks). After that late slump and a slow spring, it appears Yost has lost a little faith in Gordon. The defending AL champs are leading with Alcides Escobar, followed by Moustakas. That's some likely OBP issues at the top of the order.
