[新聞] Royals make September callups
The Royals officially activated Alex Gordon from the disabled list, six weeks
after he left the July 8 game against Tampa Bay with a strained groin. Gordon
was hitting .279/.394/.457 before he was shelved. He is in the lineup hitting
sixth tonight.
The Royals also called up several players from the minor leagues as rosters
expanded today. The team announced the promotion of catcher Francisco Pena,
infielders Cheslor Cuthbert and Christian Colon, outfielder Terrance Gore,
and pitchers Miguel Almonte and Scott Alexander. Omaha continues play until
September 7, and Northwest Arkansas could be in the playoffs until September
11, so more callups may be made when those teams are finished.
Francisco Pena was a September call up last season, and appeared in one game
earlier this season, getting his only Major League at-bat. The 25-year old
right-hander hit .251/.305/.430 with 13 HR 48 BI in 95 games for Omaha.
Cheslor Cuthbert also saw action with the Royals earlier this year, getting
in eight games. The 22-year old Nicaraguan hit .277/.339/.421 with 11 HR 51
RBI in 104 games for Omaha.
Christian Colon is a former first-rounder who scored the game winning run in
the Wild Card game last year. The Royals sent him to Omaha this year to get
more playing time and work on his defense. He hit .281/.353/.344 with 1 HR 17
RBI in 51 games with Omaha.
Terrance Gore is a speedster who was on the post-season roster last year as a
designated pinch runner. The 24-year old Gore hit .284/.367/.311 in 85 games
with Northwest Arkansas with 39 steals in 41 attempts.
Miguel Almonte has never appeared in a Major League game. The 22-year old
Dominican right-hander had a 4.51 ERA in 103.2 innings across AA and AAA with
8.3 strikeouts-per-nine-innings. He has a live arm that can throw in the
mid-90s and is expected to pitch in the bullpen. Before the season he was
named a Top 100 prospect in baseball by both MLB.com and Baseball Prospectus.
Scott Alexander is a 25-year old left-hander drafted in the sixth round in
2010 by the Royals. In 41 relief appearances for Omaha he had a 2.56 ERA with
14 saves. Lefties hit just .140/.229/.151 against him this season.
Alexander and Almonte need to be added to the 40-man roster, which had two
vacant spots on it. The Royals also officially added Jonny Gomes to the
roster, and transferred pitcher Jason Vargas to the 60-day disabled list to
make room for him.
