SURPRISE, ARIZ.
The Royals were sixth in baseball in international spending during the
calendar year of 2015, according to data compiled by Baseball America.
The Royals spent $5.64 million on international signings in 2015, the
majority of which came after the 2015-16 signing period began on July 2. The
franchise surpassed its allotted bonus pool for 2015-16, according to
Baseball America.
If you exclude Cuban signings — some of which are not subject to the
international bonus pool system — the Royals ranked fourth in all of
baseball. Only the Cubs ($15.53 million), Giants ($8.06 million) and Dodgers
($7.88 million) spent more. All of the Royals’ $5.64 million was spent on
non-Cuban prospects.
Among the Royals’ most expensive signings:
17-year-old Dominican outfielder Seuly Matias ($2.25 million)
17-year-old Dominican shortstop Jeison Guzman ($1.5 million).
In Venezuela, the Royals also spent
$450,000 on 17-year-old catcher Sebastian Rivero
$425,000 on 17-year-old shortstop Angel Medina,
according to Baseball America.
