Royals spent $5.64 million on international signings in 2015, according to Baseball America BY RUSTIN DODD SURPRISE, ARIZ. The Royals were sixth in baseball in international spending during the calendar year of 2015, according to data compiled by Baseball America. The Royals spent $5.64 million on international signings in 2015, the majority of which came after the 2015-16 signing period began on July 2. If you exclude Cuban signings — some of which are not subject to the international bonus pool system — the Royals ranked fourth in all of baseball. Only the Cubs ($15.53 million), Giants ($8.06 million) and Dodgers ($7.88 million) spent more. All of the Royals’ $5.64 million was spent on non-Cuban prospects. Among the Royals’ most expensive signings: 17-year-old Dominican outfielder Seuly Matias ($2.25 million) 17-year-old Dominican shortstop Jeison Guzman ($1.5 million). In Venezuela, the Royals also spent $450,000 on 17-year-old catcher Sebastian Rivero $425,000 on 17-year-old shortstop Angel Medina, according to Baseball America.
