He signed a nine-year deal with the Cubs that runs through 2020 that is very club-friendly, although he canpt out of it and go through the arbitration process. If he does not opt out, Soler will earn $3 million in 2017, and $4 million each year from 2018-2020. The right-handed hitter isauded for his power potential, but has been a bit underwhelming in two Major League seasons so far. He missed some time in 2015 due to an ankle injury and oblique injury, and finished the year hitting .262/.324/.399 with 10 home runs in 404 plate appearances. He struck out 30% of the time, but when he did make contact he did flash power at times. He hit just .238/.333/.436 with 12 home runs in 264 plate appearances this year, while missing two months with a hamstring injury. Soler has a good arm and decent range, but his frequent misplays make him a below-average defender. He also also had some character issues, getting suspended forpproaching an opposing dugout with a batn the minors, and gettingenched for failing to hustle. Wade Davis enters the final year of his contract, which will pay him $10 million in 2017. Originally acquired in a trade withames Shieldsnd Elliott Johnson from Tampa Bay in exchange foril Myers,ake Odorizzi,ike Montgomery, andatrick Leonard, Davis was an awful starter for the Royals in 2013 with a 5.32 ERA before the Royals moved him to the bullpen. He was dominant from the start as a reliever, posting a ridiculous 1.18 ERA in three seaons with 234 strikeouts in 182nnings from 2014-2016. He is the only pitcher in Major League history to post back-to-back seasons with an ERA of 1.00 or lower, with at least 50 innings pitched. The Royals fielded offers for Davis last July, but a forearm inury that landed him on the disabled list scuttled any plans for a trade. Davis finished the season with a 1.87 ERA and 27 saves in 43nnings pitched. The Cubs have been heavily pursuing an elite reliever this winter withroldis Chapmaniling for free agency and expecting an $80+ million contract. Davis likely moves into the closer’s role at Wrigley Field, with the Cubs possiblyeuniting him with former teammate Greg Holland.
