The Royals announced today that they have invited 22 non-roster players to
Major League Spring Training in Surprise, Ariz. Among the invitations are 13
pitchers, four catchers, four infielders and one outfielder.
Six of the 22 are players recently signed to Minor League contracts,
including: LHP Jonathan Sanchez, RHPs Al Alburquerque, Brandon League, Bobby
Parnell and Chris Withrow and infielder Garin Cecchini.
Sanchez, 34, rejoins the Royals’ organization after pitching in Kansas City
in 2012. He has not pitched in affiliated baseball since 2014, when he made
one appearance with the Cubs’ Triple-A Iowa. He last pitched in the Majors
in 2013, making five appearances with Pittsburgh.
Royals’ director of professional scouting, Gene Watson, clocked Sanchez at 92
–95 mph last fall for Mayaguez of the Roberto Clemente Baseball League in
Puerto Rico.
Alburquerque, 30, split the 2016 season between the Angels’ and Mariners’
organizations, making two appearances with Los Angeles in June. Across three
minor league stops, he posted a 3.80 ERA (10 ER in 23.2 IP) with eight saves
and 26 strikeouts in 34 appearances.
League, 33, did not pitch in 2016 after spending the previous four seasons
(2012–15) in the Dodgers’ organization. He most recently posted a 2.57 ERA
(18 ER in 63.0 IP) in 63 appearances in 2014. He’s pitched in parts of 11
seasons in the Majors, owning a 3.65 ERA with 74 saves in 498 appearances.
Parnell, 32, pitched in the Tigers’ organization last season and made six
appearances at the Major League level. He pitched primarily at Triple-A
Toledo, where he recorded 12 saves and a 3.95 ERA (19 ER in 43.1 IP) in 44
appearances.
Withrow, 27, made 46 appearances for Atlanta in 2016, going 3–0 with a 3.58
ERA (15 ER in 37.2 IP). A former first-round pick (20th overall) by the
Dodgers in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Withrow has pitched in parts of
three seasons at the Major League level, going 6–0 with a 3.07 ERA in 92
appearances with a 9.5 SO/9 (99 SO in 93.2 IP), holding opponents to a .180
average.
Cecchini, 25, spent the 2016 season with the Brewers’ Triple-A Colorado
Springs and hit .271/.325/.380 with 31 extra-base hits and 13 stolen bases in
469 plate appearances, making starts at first base (58), third base (43) and
second base (two). He has appeared in 13 Major Leagues games with Boston from
2014–15.
The remaining 16 players played in the Royals’ organization last season. Of
those, 14 were drafted by the Royals, including: LHPs Jonathan Dziedzic (13th
round, 2013), Eric Skoglund (third round, 2014) and Eric Stout (13th round,
2014), RHPs Malcom Culver (eighth round, 2008), Luke Farrell (sixth round,
2013), A.J. Puckett (second round, 2016) and Josh Staumont (second round,
2015), catchers Zane Evans (fourth round, 2013), Xavier Fernandez (11th
round, 2013), Parker Morin (14th round, 2012) and Chase Vallot (Competitive
Balance Round, 2014), infielders Ryan O’Hearn (eight round, 2014) and Corey
Toups (15th round, 2014) and outfielder Alfredo Escalera (eighth round, 2012).
Right-handed pitcher Yender Caramo and infielder Humberto Arteaga both signed
as a non-drafted free agents.
The Royals now have 62 players listed on their Spring Training roster. The
first workout for pitchers and catchers will be on Tuesday, Feb. 14, and the
first full-team workout is Friday, Feb. 17.
