Over his first two seasons at the University of Virginia, Lynch struggled to
put up decent numbers, getting hit and not missing a ton of bats. A very
strong showing last summer in the Cape Cod League changed his trajectory and
the southpaw has continued to pitch well in the Cavaliers' weekend rotation.
The 6-foot-4 southpaw does have room to add some strength and thus has some
projection, though the pitchability lefty thing is working for him this
spring. He commands his fastball, which sits in the 88-92 mph range in most
starts, often touching 93 mph. His above-average changeup, thrown with
excellent deception and late sink, is his best secondary offering. On the
Cape, his breaking stuff was solid, but it's been not quite as sharp back in
school. He has shown a solid slider and fringy curve, though they lack real
bite at times.
With his size, relatively easy delivery, ability to throw strikes and solid
stuff, many feel Lynch has the tools to start long-term. Others feel he's
destined to be a fastball-changeup reliever. A team that believes the former
is likely to be the one to take him in the top three rounds.
