Wilkinson eyes next season
Jonny Wilkinson looks increasingly likely to be out of England action
for a year as he recuperates from surgery on a shoulder problem.
The 24-year-old fly-half had further tests in London on Monday.
But his Newcastle club coach Rob Andrew said he "very much doubts"
that he will be fit for England's summer tour to New Zealand and
Australia.
Andrew told the Daily Express that the 13 November game against
Canada was a more likely target.
"We've told him to forget about it until next season," Andrew said.
"He has to come to terms with the fact that there's no point in
coming back too soon. I doubt very much he will be fit for the tour."
Wilkinson has played just 53 minutes of rugby since his winning
drop-goal secured victory against Australia on 22 November because
of a damaged nerve between his spine and his shoulder which he
aggravated playing for Newcastle.
He has been reduced to the role of water carrier for the Falcons
as he works on his non-contact fitness.
Recently, he told BBC Radio Five Live: "I am working as hard as I
can to be around for the summer.
"The improvement will need to speed up for that to happen, but at
the same time, that is a possibility.
"It is difficult to say when I will be back given the frustrating
nature of this injury. I just don't know what is happening.
"I know it is getting better but it is taking a lot of time. What
I do know is that I don't want to go through this again.
"I am putting my life in the hands of professionals who are looking
after me and I am going to try to come back fitter and stronger."
