Career Notes
* Selected for the All Blacks before he'd even played a full Super 12 game
and was man of the match on Test debut against Ireland.
* New Zealand's NPC and Under-21 Player of the Year in 2001. Last year he
was voted the International Rugby Player's Association Newcomer of the Year.
* A member of the New Zealand's World Cup winning Under-19 team in Wales in
1999, McCaw also played in two international tournament winning New Zealand
Under-21 teams in 2000 and 2001.
Richard McCaw is a dynamic flanker in the mould of former All Black captain
and current NZRU board member Graham Mourie. McCaw was brought up in North
Otago and educated in Dunedin prior to settling in Christchurch. McCaw backed
up the promising start to his Test career on the tour of Ireland, Scotland and
Argentina in 2001 by being one of the All Blacks' best in last year's
Tri-Nations success.

World Cup 官網的介紹,All Blacks的Key-player之一
Richie McCaw (Flanker, Canterbury and Crusaders)
When legendary All Black Josh Kronfeld stepped down from international rugby
to pursue a club career in England in 2001, most New Zealanders believed they
had lost one of their all-time greatest openside flankers.
However they did not have long to wait before for a player emerged who can
fill Kronfeld's big shoes.
Twenty-two-year-old flanker Richie McCaw is a mobile, hard-working and
brilliant loose forward who is quickly earning a reputation as being as good
as, if not better than Kronfeld.
At 1.88 metres and 105 kilos, McCaw is perfectly built for a flanker and his
lightning speed sees him often getting to the breakdown to secure the ball for
his side before the props have even popped their head up from the scrum.
He is potent in attack and can often be spotted linking the forwards and backs
with an incisive run or well judged pass. Another with leadership credentials,
he captained New Zealand Colts in their victorious final of the 2001 Under 21
Southern Hemisphere Championship in Sydney.
Later the same year, in his first season of provincial rugby, he spearheaded
Canterbury's charge to another National Provincial Championship title and went
on to star on the All Blacks픠end-of-year tour to the Northern Hemisphere,
John Mitchell's first as Coach.
This tour saw him pick up the Man of Match Award on his Test debut against
Ireland in Dublin, the first of his 14 Test caps to date with one try scored.
It was no surprise at the end of 2001 when he was named both New Zealand's
Under 21 and National Provincial Championship First Division Player of the
Year.
Heading into the 2002 Super 12 season McCaw had only played a total of eight
minutes of Super 12 rugby. However he went on to become instrumental in the
Canterbury Crusader's Super 12 victory, helping his team to become the first
to win every match in a Super 12 season.
